A student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School (SHTS) has recounted his terrifying ordeal after being violently attacked during a district inter‑school athletics competition in Agona Swedru, Central Region.
The incident occurred on 19 February 2026, when a sporting event meant to showcase youth talent and healthy competition descended into chaos. Students from rival schools engaged in physical clashes, including stone-throwing and direct assaults, leaving many participants and spectators shocked. The violent episode was captured on video and widely shared on social media, sparking public outrage.
The victim, identified as Fiadzigbe, suffered cuts to his face and a broken tooth. He explained that he was targeted while trying to find a place to sit and apply medicine to his eye. “I didn’t do anything. I was just standing there,” he said, describing how the attack came without warning.
Eyewitnesses reported that tensions between students escalated quickly, turning what should have been a celebration of school spirit into a dangerous confrontation. The incident involved students from Obrachire SHS and Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).
Following the viral footage and public outcry, the Ghana Police Service (CID) intervened and gave the schools a 24-hour ultimatum to hand over those responsible. In compliance, school authorities produced three students from SWESBUS Joseph Amoh (20), Benedict Appiah (18), and Bilal Mamud (18) — who were subsequently arrested and taken into police custody. They are expected to face charges related to the assault and to be arraigned in court.
In addition to the arrests, the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Central Region suspended all zonal inter-school sporting activities indefinitely. Officials cited safety concerns and the need to restore order before allowing competitions to resume. The GES emphasized that school sports should foster teamwork, discipline, and respect values that were undermined by the violent incident.
Fiadzigbe and many members of the public are calling for justice and accountability. “I want them to be arrested. Whatever the government wants to do to them,” he stated, echoing the wider sentiment that students who engage in violent behaviour must face firm consequences.
The events in Agona Swedru have reignited national conversations about student discipline, safety in schools, and the role of both parents and educators in preventing hooliganism. While the arrests signal a serious response from authorities, education stakeholders stress that long-term measures, including better supervision and enforcement of codes of conduct, are necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.
