Ukraine has categorically rejected allegations made by veteran Ghanaian journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr that the country supplied terrorists responsible for the deadly attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso. The Ukrainian government described the claims as false and misleading, emphasizing that they have no basis in fact.
In an official statement, spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi of Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the allegations are unfounded and distract from ongoing diplomatic engagements between Ghana and Ukraine. He stressed that Ukraine has not supplied any militants or supported extremist groups in West Africa.
The controversy stems from Pratt’s assertions that Ukrainian authorities were involved in supplying terrorists who attacked traders in Titao, northern Burkina Faso, resulting in multiple deaths. The Ukrainian government has strongly refuted these claims, calling them misinformation that undermines constructive dialogue between the two nations.
The allegations coincided with a high-profile diplomatic visit to Kyiv by Ghanaian officials, including Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who met with Ukrainian authorities to discuss issues including the welfare of Ghanaian nationals detained in Ukraine and broader bilateral cooperation.
Ukrainian authorities reiterated their commitment to clarifying misinformation and maintaining good relations with Ghana. They emphasized that statements suggesting Kyiv’s involvement in violent extremist activity in West Africa are entirely false.
Experts note that such misinformation can create unnecessary tensions in international relations, and Ukrainian officials have urged that public discourse be based on verified evidence, particularly regarding sensitive security matters.
The Ghanaian government continues to engage with Ukraine on issues of national interest, including ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad and preventing the trafficking or recruitment of vulnerable individuals into conflict zones. The Ukrainian response underscores Kyiv’s position that it is not involved in extremist networks operating in West Africa and remains committed to diplomatic cooperation with Ghana.
