An Adenta Circuit Court has remanded a man into police custody after he was accused of spreading false information alleging that there was a military plot to assassinate President John Dramani Mahama.
The accused, who is reported to be a laundry attendant, was arrested after publishing claims that authorities say were untrue and capable of causing public fear and panic. Prosecutors told the court that the allegation posed a serious threat to national security and public order.
During the court proceedings, the presiding judge ordered that the suspect remain in custody while investigations continue. The prosecution is expected to conclude its investigations and advise the court on the appropriate charges when the case is recalled.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned that the spread of misinformation, particularly on sensitive national security matters, can destabilise society and undermine public confidence in state institutions.
The case has renewed calls for responsible use of social media and stricter enforcement of laws against the dissemination of false information. Authorities say they remain committed to safeguarding national security and ensuring that individuals who deliberately spread misleading information are held accountable.
