Ghanaian lawmaker Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has confirmed that two Ghanaian nationals currently held in a prisoner-of-war camp in Ukraine are alive and in stable condition. The confirmation comes after Ablakwa was granted special access to visit the detained citizens, in a move hailed as a rare diplomatic gesture.
During the visit, Ablakwa observed that the Ghanaians were being treated in accordance with international standards, and he thanked Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha for facilitating the engagement. The identities of the two men have not been disclosed publicly for security reasons.
The Ghanaian government has been actively pursuing diplomatic channels to ensure the safety and eventual release of its citizens. Ablakwa described the visit as an important step in providing reassurance to families and communities in Ghana who have been anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
He further highlighted concerns over networks that have allegedly lured young Africans into the conflict zone, often with promises of employment or opportunities, only for them to end up in hazardous situations abroad. The visit and subsequent discussions underscore Ghana’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens and reinforcing humanitarian considerations in international conflict situations.
Officials say the visit also strengthened bilateral discussions between Ghana and Ukraine, focusing not only on the welfare of the detained nationals but also on broader cooperation and protection mechanisms for Ghanaian citizens abroad. Ablakwa expressed optimism that continued diplomatic engagement will lead to the safe return of the two men.
The confirmation that the Ghanaians are alive will bring relief to families and the wider public, even as Ghana continues to work closely with Ukrainian authorities to ensure their security and eventual repatriation.
