President John Dramani Mahama has officially inaugurated what is being described as the world’s largest calcined clay cement plant in Tema, a development set to transform Ghana’s construction and industrial sectors.
The state-of-the-art facility is designed to boost local cement production, create jobs, and strengthen Ghana’s position in the West African building materials market. Located in the Greater Accra Region, the plant uses advanced technology to produce calcined clay cement, an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional cement. This type of cement requires less energy to manufacture and emits fewer greenhouse gases, contributing to more sustainable construction practices.
At the commissioning ceremony, President Mahama emphasised the plant’s role in advancing Ghana’s industrialisation and economic development agenda. He noted that the facility would not only meet domestic cement demand but also reduce reliance on imports. “This plant represents a milestone in innovation and industrial capacity,” he said. “It has the potential to transform our construction industry and support sustainable manufacturing in Ghana.” Key Features of the Plant
The Tema facility specialises in producing high-performance calcined clay cement, which combines heated (calcined) clay with limestone. This process improves the strength and durability of cement while reducing its carbon footprint, making it an important step toward environmentally responsible construction.
Experts note that Ghana’s adoption of calcined clay cement positions the country as a regional leader in sustainable building materials, in line with global climate and environmental goals. Economic and Environmental Impact
The new plant is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities, from technical and operational roles to logistics and supply chain jobs. Local cement production will also help stabilise prices, benefiting developers, contractors, and consumers.
From an environmental perspective, the plant supports Ghana’s efforts to reduce industrial emissions and promote green growth. By producing cement with a smaller carbon footprint, the facility contributes to the country’s climate action commitments. Strengthening Ghana’s Manufacturing Sector
The commissioning of the Tema plant reflects Ghana’s broader strategy to expand its manufacturing base and diversify the economy beyond traditional sectors like agriculture and mining. By encouraging industrial innovation and investment in value-added production, Ghana aims to create jobs, enhance exports, and build economic resilience.
The launch of the calcined clay cement facility marks a significant step forward for Ghana’s construction industry, combining economic growth with sustainable manufacturing practices. Officials and industry stakeholders have welcomed the plant, which is expected to play a major role in meeting rising domestic demand for cement driven by infrastructure development and urbanisation.
