Argentina captain Lionel Messi was briefly knocked to the ground during a pitch invasion while playing for Inter Miami CF in a friendly match against Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle on 26 February 2026 in Puerto Rico. The game ended in a 2‑1 victory for Inter Miami, with Messi scoring the winning goal.
The incident occurred in the 88th minute, when several fans ran onto the pitch. One supporter reached Messi and grabbed him from behind, prompting security to intervene. In the scuffle, a security officer tackled the pitch invader and unintentionally brought Messi to the ground. Fortunately, Messi was unharmed and quickly returned to his feet.
Messi had come on as a halftime substitute and made a decisive contribution by converting a penalty in the 70th minute, which secured Inter Miami’s win. The match had initially been scheduled for 13 February but was postponed due to a hamstring injury Messi sustained earlier.
The pitch invasion was captured on video and circulated widely, showing multiple fans briefly on the playing field some attempting selfies or autographs. Security quickly regained control of the situation, preventing further disruption. Despite the incident, Messi remained calm and focused, demonstrating his professionalism on the field.
Inter Miami now turns its attention to upcoming fixtures, including a match against Orlando City SC, as they continue their preparations for the MLS season. While the pitch invasion raised concerns about stadium security, Messi’s lack of injury is a relief to fans and the team alike.
