Salaga South MP Supports 400 Vulnerable Women with Fertilizer Donation

The Member of Parliament for the Salaga South Constituency, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimiah, in collaboration with the Sisters of JDM Foundation, has provided critical agricultural support to 400 vulnerable women in the constituency through the donation of fertilizers aimed at boosting farm productivity and improving livelihoods.

Speaking to the media during the distribution exercise, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimiah explained that the initiative forms part of her broader commitment to supporting vulnerable groups, especially women, across communities in the constituency.

She revealed that during her engagements with women in various communities, many of them appealed for support with basic farming inputs, particularly fertilizers, to help improve their farming activities and yields. These requests, she said, informed the decision to prioritize agricultural support as a practical intervention.

As a result, 400 bags of fertilizer were distributed to widows, single mothers, divorced women, and other vulnerable women selected from different communities within the Salaga South Constituency. The beneficiaries are largely engaged in small-scale farming, especially vegetable cultivation.

The MP noted that the joy and appreciation expressed by the women demonstrated the importance of the intervention and its potential impact on their livelihoods. She explained that the fertilizers are expected to significantly improve crop yields and strengthen the women’s capacity to sustain their farming activities.

Most of the beneficiaries are involved in the cultivation of crops such as agushie (egusi), watermelon, and other vegetables, which play a vital role in household nutrition and food supply. Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimiah emphasized that vegetable farming is not only essential for food security but also critical for improving child nutrition in rural households.

She further stated that empowering women in agriculture creates multiple benefits, including improved household food security and income generation. According to her, surplus farm produce is often sold to support family needs such as education, healthcare, and other essential expenses.

The MP also announced plans to deepen collaboration with the Sisters of JDM Foundation and the Women Empowerment Foundation of the Salaga South Constituency to make the initiative a regular exercise. She disclosed that future support programmes will go beyond fertilizer distribution.

Planned interventions, she said, may include cash support, farming tools, clothing, boots, food items, and seed capital for small-scale trading activities, aimed at building sustainable livelihoods for women.

Reaffirming her commitment to women’s empowerment, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimiah stressed that empowering women directly translates into stronger families and stable communities.

“When women are empowered, the entire family benefits. Whatever support women receive is taken back home to ensure peace, stability, and comfort within the household,” she stated.
