President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed circulating claims that the proposed new market in Wa is being influenced by directives from “above” or political interests. In a public clarification, Mahama stressed that the siting of the market is guided by proper planning and community consultations, not by hidden orders or partisan considerations.
The controversy arose after reports suggested that certain individuals or political actors were attempting to influence where the market should be located, sparking concern among traders, local residents, and community leaders. These claims created anxiety about fairness, transparency, and the potential impact on livelihoods for those who rely on market activities for their income.
Addressing the issue, President Mahama emphasised that decisions about public infrastructure projects are based on technical assessments, local input, and community needs. He made it clear that no hidden agendas or political interference dictate where public facilities, including markets, should be sited. According to him, ensuring that such projects benefit the maximum number of people is the priority, and rumours to the contrary are unfounded.
Mahama highlighted the importance of public trust and the role of open communication in governance. “There is no order from above anywhere regarding the Wa market,” he stated, underlining that planning processes are meant to be transparent and inclusive. He urged residents and stakeholders to focus on constructive engagement rather than unverified claims or speculation, which could delay or undermine critical development initiatives.
Residents of Wa responded positively to the clarification, with many expressing relief that the president personally addressed the rumours. Traders welcomed the reassurance that their voices and concerns would be taken into account, and emphasised that equitable access and fairness are crucial in determining the market’s final location. Other community members echoed the call for ongoing transparency throughout the planning and implementation process to prevent misunderstandings or perceptions of bias.
The proposed Wa market is a key development project intended to improve trading conditions, enhance business opportunities, and stimulate economic activity in the Upper West Region. A well-sited and efficiently managed market is expected to benefit traders, consumers, and the wider community by providing safer and more organised commercial spaces.
By publicly clarifying the situation, President Mahama reinforced the principle that decision-making for public projects should be inclusive, consultative, and free from undue influence. His remarks also serve as a reminder of the importance of accurate information in community development and the potential for misinformation to cause unnecessary tension.
As planning continues, local authorities, community leaders, and stakeholders are expected to work together to finalise the market location in a manner that is transparent, fair, and aligned with the needs of traders and residents, ensuring that the Wa market project achieves its intended benefits.
