A pregnant woman in the Ashanti Region has expressed regret after her husband was sentenced to six years in prison for assaulting her, saying she never intended for the punishment to be so severe.
The woman, identified as Priscilla Sackey, said she initially reported the matter to the police hoping that authorities would caution or discipline her husband for his actions. However, the case eventually went through the legal system and resulted in a lengthy prison sentence, a decision she says has left her deeply distressed.
Her husband, Eric Agyei, was convicted by the court after being found guilty of physically assaulting his wife during a domestic dispute. Following the trial, the court sentenced him to six years’ imprisonment.
Speaking after the verdict, Sackey said she regrets reporting the incident because she did not expect the matter to escalate to such an extent.
“I only wanted him punished, not jailed for six years,” she reportedly said, expressing disappointment over the outcome of the case.
According to her, the intention behind filing the complaint was to ensure that her husband would learn from the incident and avoid repeating such behaviour in the future. She explained that she hoped the involvement of the police would serve as a warning and help resolve the situation within the family.
Instead, the matter developed into a full criminal case that ended with the court imposing a custodial sentence.
Sackey, who is currently expecting a child, said the situation has left her worried about her future and that of the unborn baby. She noted that she now faces the difficult prospect of raising the child without the support of her husband.
She has therefore appealed to authorities and other relevant stakeholders to reconsider the case and possibly show leniency toward her husband.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion among members of the public, with opinions divided over the situation. Some people have sympathized with the woman, suggesting that reconciliation should be considered given her current condition and her request for mercy.
Others, however, believe that cases involving domestic violence must be treated seriously to protect victims and discourage similar incidents in society.
Experts on domestic violence say it is common for victims to later reconsider their decisions after reporting abusive partners, often due to emotional ties, financial dependency, or concern about family stability.
Legal analysts also point out that once a case is reported and taken to court, the final decision lies with the judiciary rather than the complainant alone.
They explain that the law is designed to ensure accountability for acts of violence, particularly in cases involving spouses or vulnerable individuals.
Despite the ongoing public debate, Sackey continues to plead for mercy for her husband, saying she never expected that her complaint would lead to such a lengthy prison term.
The case has drawn significant public attention, highlighting the complex challenges surrounding domestic disputes, justice, and family relationships.
