A Ghanaian peacekeeper serving with a United Nations mission in Lebanon is reportedly recovering after being injured during a missile attack on a UN base in the country.
The soldier, Lance Corporal Albert Abrefa Busia of the Ghana Armed Forces, sustained injuries when missiles struck a base operated by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon. The incident occurred amid ongoing tensions in the region, which have seen periodic exchanges of fire.
According to the United Nations, the peacekeeper received medical attention after the attack and is currently recovering. Officials say his condition is stable and that he is responding well to treatment.
Reports indicate that the Ghanaian battalion headquarters was hit during the attack, causing damage to parts of the facility and leaving several personnel injured. Apart from the Ghanaian soldier, other peacekeepers stationed at the base were also affected, although the extent of their injuries was reported to be minor.
The United Nations strongly condemned the attack, stressing that peacekeepers operating under international mandates must be protected at all times. The global organization noted that attacks on UN personnel violate international law and undermine efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability in conflict zones.
Ghanaian authorities have also expressed concern about the safety of their troops serving abroad. Ghana has a long-standing reputation as one of the key contributors to UN peacekeeping missions around the world, with its soldiers deployed in several countries to support global peace and security efforts.
Officials emphasized the need for all parties involved in the conflict to respect the neutrality of peacekeepers and ensure their safety while carrying out their duties.
The attack highlights the risks faced by peacekeepers working in volatile regions as they strive to maintain stability and prevent further escalation of conflicts.
