Fear Grips Kampala and Surrounding Towns Amid Rising Gang Attacks

Residents of Kampala and neighbouring towns are living in fear as a series of violent gang attacks spreads across the Kampala Metropolitan Area (KMP). Armed with machetes, knives, and other weapons, these groups have targeted commuters, workers, and businesses, prompting widespread concern among local communities.

The surge in criminal activity has been reported in several areas, including Nansana Municipality, Kajjansi, Nsangi, Kira Municipality, as well as parts of Wakiso and Mukono districts. Attacks have occurred along major roads like the Northern Bypass and in residential neighbourhoods, leaving victims traumatised and residents demanding urgent action from security forces.

One of the most recent incidents involved Lyton Nabwami, who was assaulted on the night of Valentine’s Day eve while riding on a motorcycle in Kibwa Village, Nabweru. She and her companion were pursued by gang members on motorcycles, attacked, and had their belongings stolen. Nabwami revealed that even nearby businesses, including a pharmacy, were robbed during the same period.

Other residents have reported similar encounters, describing groups of assailants moving in packs, targeting individuals along poorly lit streets and vulnerable areas. The widespread circulation of videos and posts on social media has amplified public alarm, with many people expressing frustration over delayed police responses and the apparent increase in violent crimes.

Although police officials have stated that crime levels remain “normal,” their coordinated arrests and operations suggest a recognition of a growing threat. Security forces have intensified patrols, conducted raids on suspected gang hideouts, and arrested numerous suspects linked to criminal activities across the metropolitan region.

Divisional police officers from Nsangi, Kajjansi, Nateete, and Kira have reportedly apprehended several individuals involved in assaults, robberies, and the illegal possession of weapons. Authorities are also monitoring areas where gangs are known to hide or plan attacks, including abandoned buildings and remote locations.

Local leaders and division mayors have acknowledged the fear gripping communities, even as police spokespeople urge calm. Residents in areas such as Bulindo, Buwate, Kyengera, and Masanda say gangs exploit weak security at night to commit robberies, assaults, and other violent acts, leaving many fearful to travel after dark.

The spike in criminal activity comes amid ongoing concerns about violence in the region, including armed robberies, murders, and organised gang attacks in recent months. Many residents have altered their daily routines, avoiding previously safe areas, and restricting night-time movements in response to the threat.

Police have encouraged the public to report suspicious behaviour while asserting that the city has not been overrun by crime. Security operations remain ongoing, with authorities attempting to reassure citizens that efforts are being made to restore order and enhance community safety.
