Fake Soldier Faces More Trouble After Confrontation by Defence Minister

A man who previously impersonated a soldier has landed in further trouble after being publicly confronted by Ghana’s Minister of Defence over allegations of involvement in multiple fraudulent activities.

The suspect, identified as Joseph Baatah, was first arrested at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra on Monday, 9 February 2026, after he was found wearing a military uniform and falsely claiming to be an active service member. Subsequent investigations suggest that Baatah may have engaged in similar scams on multiple occasions, prompting heightened scrutiny from both military and law enforcement authorities.

During a public confrontation, the Defence Minister personally questioned Baatah regarding these alleged incidents, emphasising that impersonating military personnel is a serious offence that undermines public trust in the Ghana Armed Forces. The Minister warned that such actions could not be tolerated and reiterated the government’s commitment to holding offenders accountable.

Security sources revealed that Baatah’s arrest followed suspicious behaviour observed by hospital and military personnel. Investigations found that he had been misrepresenting himself as a soldier to gain access to restricted areas and interact with civilians under false pretences. Authorities have indicated that he could face additional charges if further wrongdoing is confirmed.

Officials stressed that impersonation of military personnel is a grave offence because it can be used to commit fraud, extortion, and other crimes, posing risks to national security and public safety. They urged the public to remain vigilant and verify credentials before trusting anyone claiming to be a member of the armed forces.
